Ward Halloween Night

Although technically this was not a RS activity, it was so good that we have had a few requests to put it on the blog. Alot of these photos are thanks to Toni Coward who got awesome shots in before it got too dark.

Last night our ward held our "trunk or treat" Halloween Party ward activity. It is becoming more popular and safer now for everyone to meet together, say in a carpark, and decorate the boot of their car. All the children then go around each boot collect their treats and participate in some gooey, slimy or scary activity that is going on from each boot.

It is much safer than letting the kids go off to knock on people's doors, particularly those they don't know or if everyone lives too far away from each other to walk.

Our activity was held at the Websters home in Weegeena. It was a great missionary opportunity as heaps of non-member families came and had a fantastic time.

The evening started with the trunk or treat with all the cars set up in a big circle and all the kids got heaps of lollies - enough to keep them hyper for days. (sorry parents) We also held a doughnut eating competition with doughnuts tied with string hanging from one big long piece of string and you had to try and eat the doughnut as quick as you could with your hands behind your back.

For tea we had a sausage sizzle and heaps of different desserts - pumpkin pie of course, spicy pumpkin roll and finger food that members brought along.

Next on the agenda was a hayride for the kids. Kim Triffitt had brought in his tractor with a big flat tray trailer on the back piled up with bales of hay. All the kids jumped on, still clutching their lollies and off we went. Levi was dressed up as Dracula with a big long cape and he got on his motorbike and kept everyone entertained through the paddocks by doing wheelies and jumps. It was a sight to see, particularly with nighttime approaching.

When the hayride finished, the haunted house was opened up. The Webster family along with the help of the Young Men had decked out their huge shed all with boxes covered in black. They made tunnels and paths that we had to crawl through and follow. It was pitch black except for some weird lights and the young men were dressed up with masks and they would jump out at us. It was really effective. Groups of four would go in at a time and Brother Webster would make sure the young men were told if young ones were coming through as opposed to older ones who could tough out the scary stuff.

The night was a huge success and even the rain could not dampen anyone's spirits. There were some amazing costumes and Bishop got to judge the cutest and scariest ones. It was such a good night that we hope it becomes a tradition every year as Halloween once more comes around.

Freeze dried food

If anyone wishes to purchase freeze-dried food for their 72 hr packs or to use as food storage, please contact Simon. He has put up an order form on the noticeboard. Each pack is $7 which is less than half the price of camping stores. He is able to source it through the Department of Defence in Scottsdale. There are a variety of flavours to choose from.

Emma and Meisha are still in hospital. A big thankyou from her for meals done and if anyone wants to visit, feel free as they are probably in for another 2 wks.

Quilting classes are continuing on Mondays at 11an at chapel but is now being opened up to a general sewing circle for anyone

Christmas shoeboxes must be at St Mark's this Thursday. Drop off time is 10-12pm. Last opportunity to do so.

Stake Relief Society Enrichment meeting is November 24th here at Deloraine. Don't forget to bring non-perishable items for our food box in chapel foyer.

Yummy Mummy's reminder

Don't forget all you luscious Mummys out there that Yummy Mummys is on this Thursday the 18th from 10-12pm at Toni's house.

Our guest of honour will be Becky Triffitt and little Kelsea who we are farewelling from our ward. Becky and Jared have moved to Devonport and we will mis them heaps.

Newest Addition

Our lovely Primary President Emma Porter has given birth to a baby girl - Meisha May. Weighing in at 4 pounds and 43cm long. Little Meisha was born on Tuesday October 9.

Congratulations to Leon and Emma on the birth of their first child - and now there were 3.

Jackie's bread sticks

For all those out there wanting Jackie Webster's famous bread sticks recipe.

Here it is -

Jackie's pull apart bread sticks

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups of warm water
1tbsp instant yeast
2 tbsp white sugar
3cups plain flour (unsifted)
1tsp salt
250grams butter
garlic and herb salt
fresh parmesan cheese (can use shelf one but not as nice)

Method:

Mix water, yeast and sugar in a bowl. Leave for 10 mins. In another bowl combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and knead to a dough. Let rise for 10-15 mins.

Melt butter. Coat bottom of lamington tray (or similar sized tray) with butter using pastry brush.

Roll out dough with rolling pin. Cut dough into strips. Fold strips in half and twist. Lie twist flat in tray. Once all dough is in tray in twist shapes, brush more melted butter over twists and let rise for about 20-30mins or until doubled in size.

Brush over with more melted butter and sprinkle garlic and herb salt and cheese on top.

Put in oven on 180 degrees for approx 20 mins.

FHE Packet Group

Today we held another of our Enrichment activities - FHE Packet Group.

We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 1pm and swap family home evening packets.

How it works is like this:

Each person in the group comes up with a FHE idea (usually from the internet and FHE manuals). The idea includes a lesson, activity and sometimes a treat. The lesson and activity usually includes an alternative for older and younger children so you can adapt it for the ages of your own children.

The FHE is put together in an A4 yellow envelope that you pick up in packs from the post office. On the outside of the envelope we write what is included and if any prior preparation needs to be done before the night.

The idea is then duplicated for how many people are in the group. Our ward has six so you take six identical envelopes (keep one for yourself) to the meeting. At the meeting you share your envelopes around and end up taking home six different FHE packets to use in your home for the next month.

The idea is if you are going to the effort of doing an idea then it does not take much to duplicate it another five times and with each person doing that, you go home with a variety of packets that you don't have to prepare yourself each week.

The idea is that you can then pull out a packet on Monday night(leaving yourself enough time to read through and get the general gist of it) and everything is there all ready to go.

The other great plus is they are great as a sharing time in Primary or to grab to teach as a lesson at the last minute if a teacher is not there.

You can also grab a packet to take on holiday as they don't take up much room.

Risotto Night

Last night we held our Cooking Enrichment activity at Jackie's house. Our guest chef was Toni and she was demonstrating a RISOTTO. Yumo!!

She took us through each stage and I can tell you this much it involves a lot of stirring. It took about 30 minutes to cook and we all got to try it. It was divine.

Toni told us about a few different varieties but tonight she made roasted pumpkin with spinach and pine nuts.

The beauty of these cooking nights is you get to see a dish done step by step and can ask questions along the way and we know our chefs. So if things go wrong we can always ring and ask for help. Its not some old cookbook with jazzed up photos. These are simple but impressive dishes that incorproate food from your cupboard and your food storage.

After Toni's risotto, Mel told us about all the different desserts you can get out of using tinned fruit from your storage. She made a wonderful fruit crumble out of tinned pears and peaches. It went down nicely after the risotto.

Just a warning if you have not been before and want to come next time. Don't eat tea!!
